The Formula

Legal Apportionment

South African family courts use a standard formula to divide shared household expenses:

2
portions per adult
1
portion per minor child

Example 1 - Small household

1 adult and 2 minor children = 4 total portions (1×2 + 2×1). If rent is R12,000/month, each portion is R3,000. Your share (2 portions) = R6,000. Each child's share (1 portion) = R3,000.

Example 2 - Larger household

2 adults and 4 minor children = 8 total portions (2×2 + 4×1). If rent is R12,000/month, each portion is R1,500. Your share (2 portions) = R3,000. Each child's share (1 portion) = R1,500.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about maintenance schedules and how MMaintenance works.

A maintenance schedule is a detailed breakdown of monthly expenses related to raising a child. It is used in South African family courts to determine how much maintenance (child support) should be paid by the non-custodial parent.
South African courts use a standard formula: each adult counts as 2 portions and each minor child as 1 portion. Shared household expenses (rent, food, utilities) are divided by the total portions. For example, in a household with 2 adults and 2 children (6 portions), rent of R12,000 gives each portion a value of R2,000.
Expenses that only apply to you and your children (your cellphone, school fees, medical aid, aftercare) should not be split across the whole household. MMaintenance lets you mark these as "direct" so they are apportioned only among your claimed portions, giving you a fairer and more accurate schedule.
The XLSX and PDF exports follow the same format and formula used by family law attorneys in South Africa. While MMaintenance is not a legal service, the output is designed to be court-ready and can be submitted alongside your maintenance application or attached to an affidavit.
Creating your schedule is completely free - build as many as you need, preview everything, and use the AI bank statement import at no charge. When you're ready to download the court-ready Excel or PDF export, it's a once-off payment of R149 per schedule. For family law attorneys, the Legal Professional Plan at R499/mo includes unlimited exports, firm branding, client management, and more.
We use passwordless authentication. When you log in, we send a 6-digit one-time code to your email. Enter the code and you're in. No passwords to remember or reset.
On the expenses step, click "Import from Bank Statement" and upload a PDF or CSV from your bank. Our AI reads the statement, identifies recurring monthly expenses (groceries, fuel, medical aid, school fees, etc.), and suggests the correct category for each. You review every item and choose which ones to add - nothing is added without your approval.
Your data is stored securely and is only accessible to you. We do not share your information with third parties. All connections are encrypted with SSL/TLS.
